Lately I have have been thinking about how the different generations need to start coming together. For the generations to come alongside one another and begin to speak into each others lives and encourage one another along our journeys. To see spiritual mother and father relationships begin to blossom.

There is a desire in many people’s hearts for someone to come alongside and begin to father or mother them. I think God is calling out to a generation of spiritual fathers and mothers to rise up and take their place for the generation coming behind them.

What does a spiritual mother or father look like?

Spiritual mothers and fathers encourage the call that God has on your life. They help you to discover God’s purpose, gifting and unique calling and then they begin to guide you along the path that God is wanting to lead you down.

They impart wisdom, direction, strength and encouragement into your heart. They inspire you to begin to step out and to start living that unique calling that God has for you.

I am writing this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children. Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. Therefore I urge you to imitate me. For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church. 1 Corinthians 4:14-17

A spiritual mother and father also leads the way. They model the life that you aspire to. You can learn from their lives, from their mistakes and from their experiences. They also desire to see their spiritual children succeed and even surpass them.

I encourage you to look for somebody in your life that is leading the way and modeling the life that you aspire to. Somebody who is wise and is further along in their spiritual journey than you are and be brave and ask them to be a spiritual mother or father for you.

How amazing would it be to have somebody who is in your corner encouraging and imparting wisdom and strength into you? How amazing would it be to do that for somebody else? 

If you desire to have a spiritual mother or father but there is nobody sowing into your life right now then go out and start to mentor somebody yourself, find somebody that you can come along side and be for them what you wish someone was for you.

We need to answer Gods call of a generation of spiritual fathers and mothers who will rise up and take their place for the generation coming behind them. We should want to leave a spiritual legacy for our children and our children’s children so that they don’t just learn to survive in this world but they would thrive.
