What is He calling you to do?

untitled-design-1

It should not surprise us when God calls us to do something that seems outrageous because Jesus told us that we are destined to do greater things.  Sometimes He calls us to do something that seems a little out of our comfort zone and sometimes it is something that is way outside the box .

Jesus said in John chapter 14 verse 12...“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father”.

This promise was not just for Jesus’ disciples, it is a promise to all believers for Jesus said “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me” .

He then goes on to say that He will send us help, He will send us the Holy Spirit.

…”And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”. John 14: 16-17

We are not alone in our calling. When God calls us to do those things that seem outrageous, He is with us, helping us and giving us the ability to do the very thing that we may not be qualified to do but the Holy Spirit qualifies us to do it.

We just need to have obedience and faith. When God gives us a calling He is asking us to partner with His heart, we just need to trust Him and have obedience and step out. We need to have faith that He knows what He is doing, He will go with with us and help us along the way. We just need to be in tune with Him every step of the way.

That is often where we go wrong, the tuning in every step along the way bit. We hear God calling us to do something and we step out and start to do it but we forget to keep listening to Him along the way. We thought we got all our instructions at the beginning but in actual fact we may have just got the first step and we need to check back in all the time to find out the next part of the journey.

What is God calling you to do? I encourage you to not be afraid but to lean in and listen to what He is saying. Remember that you are not alone in it, you are partnering with God and He will strengthen you, speak to you and guide you along every step of the way. Keep in tune with Him and step out in obedience and faith and try to enjoy the journey.

Rewrite your history

When looking at people of faith we often gravitate to Hebrews. The start of chapter 11 says this… Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.

It goes on to list what the ancients, the hero’s of the bible, were commended for. By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family (verse 7), By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going (verse 8), and by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered Him faithful who had made the promise (verse 11).

If you compare the hero’s stories from Hebrews 11 with their actual stories, they are not the same story. For instance lets take a look at Sarah. Sarah is the founding mother of the tribes of Israel, who are Gods chosen people. Her story can be found throughout the pages of Genesis.

God promised Abraham and Sarah that they would father (and mother) a great nation. The problem was though that Sarah was barren, she was unable to bear children and so at first she laughed and mocked God at the promise He gave her (Genesis 18:12). She then tries to bring about the promise from God in her own strength and convinces Abraham to have a son through her servant girl, Hagar.  But, God is faithful and His promise comes true and eventually Sarah gives birth to a son, Issac.

Now fast forward through time to the writing of the book of Hebrews and now Sarah is mentioned as being a woman of faith. She is commended for her faith and is listed as a part of the great cloud of witnesses.

When we read Sarah’s story we often focus on all the things that she did wrong. She laughed at Gods promise, she tried to do things in her own strength and timing and not in the Lords, she was jealous and envious and then sends Hagar and her son of into the dessert and if it were not for God’s intervention there they would have died.

But, God takes Sarah’s story and He chooses to remember her as a woman of faith. Her history was re written. This is just what God does, His love is so great for us that He can see the good in us more than the bad, He chooses to forgive us, He shows us mercy and then rewrites our history so that we are remembered for all the good things.

Sometimes it is hard for us to own our past. We feel embarrassed or ashamed over the things we have done or had done to us but God encourages us to throw off everything that hinders and entangles us and to walk in faith and our great faith is what we will be remembered for.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12: 1-3

Do you feel that God is calling out to you to do something but you feel afraid? Then cast all your worries and fears on Him and and take a step of faith and do the thing that God is calling you to do. You will not be remembered for your fears but you will be remembered by your step of faith.

Take all your past hurts, mistakes, bad habits, fears, anxiety’s all that hinders you and all that entangles you and lay them at His feet. They no longer belong to you anymore, Take a hold of faith and Gods promises for you, your history is being rewritten.

Hang out with people who ignite your faith

I have this friend, she now lives on the other side of the world to me but I wish that we could be together again. I love spending time with her because she tells me the most fascinating stories of the encounters that she has with God. She has a level of faith unlike anything I have ever really seen before, she bravely steps out and takes risks with God and so has the most amazing stories to tell.

She leaves me wanting to know more, hear more, see more and encounter more of God and His goodness, power and love. She ignites my faith. She leads me to a place where I ask God to increase my faith, to take me deeper, and take me further then I have been before because I am hungry for more of You.

Faith attracts faith. Even the disciples, after they had spent time with Jesus, listening to His teachings and watching Him perform many miracles asked the Lord to increase their faith (Luke 17:5). They had been exposed to something that was beyond where they were at, they were exposed to a higher level of faith that they had never seen before and it left them hungry for more.

If you are not exposed to a higher level of faith then you do not find yourself asking the Lord to increase your faith. We need to hang out with people who ignite our faith. We need to expose ourselves to a higher level of faith so that it ignites a hunger and passion in ourselves to seek out more of the Lord and what He has for us, because He always has more for us.

Our testimonies are so powerful. When we share our stories of encounters with God and how He has radically shown His love, power and glory to us it helps to ignite each others faith. So keep sharing your encounters and keep hanging out with people who ignite your faith because this will lead you into a deeper, more intimate relationship with the Lord where amazing things can and will happen.

School’s out; quit studying the subject and start living it!

Having strong foundations are important. The foundations of a home need to be deep and strong so that when the wind blows and the earth shifts the strong foundations will keep the home firmly planted in its place.

Nothing can move a house that is firmly planted. We are also called to be like a firmly planted house with deep and strong foundations in the Lord…

“These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit—but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock.

But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don’t work them into your life, you are like a stupid carpenter who built his house on the sandy beach. When a storm rolled in and the waves came up, it collapsed like a house of cards.” Matthew 7:24-27 (MSG)

We are called to strengthen ourselves in the Lord so that we will not be swayed by the storms of life but I love how The Message translation makes it so practical, “but if you just use my words in Bible studies and don’t work them into your life, you are like a stupid carpenter who built his house on the sandy beach”.

We study the idea of having strong foundations in the Lord all the time and talk about them a lot but they mean nothing until we actually work them into our lives.

My counsel for you is simple and straightforward: Just go ahead with what you’ve been given. You received Christ Jesus, the Master; now live him. You’re deeply rooted in him. You’re well constructed upon him. You know your way around the faith. Now do what you’ve been taught. School’s out; quit studying the subject and start living it! And let your living spill over into thanksgiving. Colossians 2:6-7 (MSG)

We have been spending a lot of time building our strong foundations, we are deeply rooted in Him, we know our way around our faith and now we just need to do what we have been taught. We need to start living it.

And I am not just talking about living it out when the storms come in our life, I am talking about living out Gods word each and every day.

We have a foundation that because of what Jesus did for us, we are forgiven and free from the power of the enemy in our lives, so we no longer need to live with feelings of shame or condemnation. But, even though we know this, shame still creeps in on us all the time.

We have a foundation that Jesus came to give us an abundant life, He hears us and He responds to all of our prayers. But, even though we know this, we still worry and become anxious over our lives that we will not have enough and that we are struggling all alone.

We have strong foundations. Now we really need to start working these into our everyday lives. Ask the Lord to help you in this area, ask Him to show you what it is you need to work on first and just begin living it! And let your living spill over into thanksgiving.

When the madness sets in

IMG_8115

I was listening to the song Here Now by Hillsong United this morning and it felt very relevant to the feeling of despair that seems to be surrounding people at the moment.

I am not one to watch or listen to the news. When the news comes on the radio in the car I tend to hit the mute button as usually I have small children in the car who have sensitive ears and sensitive minds and hearts but the ‘news’ generally makes it to the feeds on my social media accounts. As hard as I try to avoid some current events they seem to find me and grab a hold of me.

I sense anger, desperation and hopelessness is filling the atmosphere at the moment, and when the song Here Now started to play through the headphones in my ears it made me stop and think that here lies a part of the answer to those feelings of madness and chaos that is swirling around at the moment.

… And my mind runs wild to comprehend what no mind on earth could understand…

We can often find ourselves in this position, our minds running wild to comprehend the things we are seeing and experiencing, but no mind on earth can understand. If only we could see from heavens perspective. If only we could have a glimpse into the future to when the madness has left us and to see ahead to the time when peace and joy reigns.

But we are in the here and now, where madness is all we can see and feel sometimes. So when the madness begins to set in we need to be still and to not join in on its crazy dance.

… Here now, all I know is I know that You are here now. Still my heart let Your voice be all I hear now. Spirit breathe like the wind come have Your way
Cause I know You’re in this place…

My mind can not comprehend some things but one thing that I know for sure is that I know that God is here now and I will still my heart and let His voice be all I hear. I will let His voice rise above all the other voices that I hear around me. His voice gives me the answers to my unanswered questions, His voice restores my faith, His voice restores my hope, my hope for a better here and now.

With my faith and hope restored I can rise above the madness that surrounds me. With the weight of the world no longer holding me down and the spirit breathing like the wind I can begin to pray, forecast hope, bring joy and shift the atmosphere.

I refuse to let the madness set in on me. Instead I will still my heart and let Gods voice be all that I hear. Spirit breathe, and like the wind come and have Your way because I know You’re in this place.
